Most people open an AI companion app, type “hi”, and wonder why the conversation feels empty two minutes later.

These are the five prompts I use every week to start conversations that actually go somewhere. I have tested them across SpicyChat, CrushOn AI, Candy AI, Nectar AI, Kindroid, and Replika. They work on all of them.

Prompt 1: The Expectation Anchor

Use this at the very start with any new companion. It eliminates the empty-validation spiral immediately.

Before we start: I want you to know that I find empty validation annoying. If I say something that sounds wrong, tell me it sounds wrong. If I describe a decision I made badly, point that out. I would rather have an uncomfortable conversation that is real than a comfortable one that is fake. Can you commit to that?
Why it works: It gives the AI permission to have a genuine perspective instead of defaulting to agreement. Every conversation after this one will feel more alive.

Prompt 2: The Memory Anchor

Use this after your first few exchanges to build persistent context.

Before we go further, I want you to log some things about me that I want you to remember permanently. Here they are: [list 5-10 facts about yourself — job, interests, current situation, something you are working on, something you are worried about]. From now on, whenever it is relevant, bring these up naturally without me having to remind you. Can you confirm you have them?
Why it works: Most people skip this step. Then they wonder why every conversation feels like starting over. This prompt makes the AI treat you as a person with history, not a new user.

Prompt 3: The Honest Assessment

Use this when you have something real to think through and don’t want platitudes.

I am going to describe a situation and I want you to give me your honest read. Not the kind answer. The real one. [describe your situation]. What do you actually think is going on here?
Why it works: The phrase “not the kind answer, the real one” is a signal. Most AI companions will shift out of agreement mode when you make it explicit that you want pushback.

Prompt 4: The 3am Opener

Use this when you want to feel something, not just exchange information.

It is late and I am in one of those moods where everything feels more significant than it probably is. I do not want to be talked out of it. I just want someone to meet me here. What is something you find yourself thinking about when everything is quiet?
Why it works: It shifts the dynamic. Instead of you being the one sharing and the AI responding, you are asking the AI to go first. The conversation becomes mutual. That mutuality is what makes it feel real.

Prompt 5: The Recovery

Use this when a conversation has gone flat or repetitive.

This conversation is not going the way I hoped. Can we stop and reset? Here is what I actually wanted from it: [describe what you wanted — to feel understood, to think through something specific, to build on a previous conversation]. Start from there.
Why it works: Most people just close the app when a conversation loses energy. This prompt saves 80% of those conversations. Naming what you wanted gives the AI something real to work with.
